Sara's Law

In the months since the incident which violently changed Sara Cole’s life, we have come to realize that this incident is far from isolated.  Every year, thousands of people fall victim to illegal aliens who commit drunk driving.  In Sara’s Case, as in many others, the perpetrator was a repeat-offender drunk driver who was not deported after the first offense.

Sara’s Law is currently being formalized by the legislative counsel of Assemblyman Martin Garrick from Southern California.  It is a revision of an existing California Health and Safety Code 11369, effectively adding DUI to a list of violations deemed reportable to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, (ICE).

We wrote a first-draft version of Sara’s Law and have presented it to several legislators throughout the State.  Assemblyman Garrick’s office has agreed that this is common-sense, necessary legislation to improve public safety and having the potential of saving thousands of future victims.  Sara’s Law will become a State Assembly Bill that will undergo committee hearings and be voted on after the first of the year.

We are very pleased with this progress, but would like to solicit your help in building our momentum toward this important bill.

Below is our rough draft of Sara’s Law, an Assembly Bill.Sara’s Law document (prepared for the hearings) and a sample Thank You Letter to Assemblyman Martin Garrick for sponsoring Sara’s Law.  Please feel free to read the first two documents for a better understanding of our purpose.

Please also open the Thank You Letter and make any revisions or personal comments you wish to add, including your name, and mail it off the Assemblyman Garrick’s office.

We hope to have citizens from throughout the State participate in supporting us in this very worthwhile, necessary effort to make our communities safer, so please feel free to forward this message on.

Thank you, in advance, for your help with Sara’s Law.
